Ornette Coleman, alto saxophone
David Izenzon, bass
Charles Moffet, drums

It is particularly useful to listen to the entire recording (as well as the excerpt on the demonstration tape) to hear the energy curve at work in this performance. Throughout the piece, the trio plays very clear and hard, driving sections referred to as straight time. Contrasted with these sections are sections that have less metric focus. The bass generally maintains a straight four-beat pattern but the drums use accents that sometimes conflict with the meter. As Coleman moves in and out of time in his solo, he is sometimes supported by a similar move in the drums and at other times supported by a clear meter. Also listen for how Coleman's solo strikes varying amounts of independence from the harmonic areas implied by the bass. This performance shows the trio's ability to both control the traditional jazz language and move "outside " that language as they shape their energy curve.
